Majority of serving military personnel enjoy reasonably good health during their active service at a relatively younger age. However, with the advancing age, particularly after retirement, some minor disabilities are likely to set in. While for serving personnel, some medical assistance is provided through the Service Hospitals / Paraplegic Centres, in respect of retired personnel there is practically no assistance available through these known sources.
In order to assist and rehabilitate disabled citizens, there are a large number of NGOs functioning across the country under the overall control and aegis of National Trust, a Govt organisation. These NGOs function specific to each type of disability. The list of these NGOs along with the disability covered can be found at the web-site of National Trust Link www. thenationaltrust. co. in Disabled Ex-Servicemen who need medical assistance are advised to directly approach the NGO nearest to their area of residence for availing the assistance/services offered by them.
Air Force Association wishes to compile basic data in respect of disabled members of AFA so as to plan and provide them with suitable support that would ultimately lead to an enhanced quality of life. The nature and extent of support that can be provided would largely depend upon the numbers involved specific to each type of disability.
